Description

Park on the north (right) side of the highway in the visitors parking lot (near the toilets). Take the trail to the left of the toilets and follow a secondary trail on the left of this tail that leads to a road. (This road is only about 2 minutes from the parking lot and leads right around the lake. It should be easy to find.) Turn right on the road. About 5 minutes down the road, you should encounter two cabins on the lake (your right). About 30 feet past the stairs on the left with a handrail is the flagged trail.

Follow the trail up steeply for about 10 to 15 minutes up until it hits the railway. Turning right and looking down the tracks, there is a rock bluff on the left about 150 metres down where the track starts to curve. On the far side of this bluff is a steep bank with flagging and a blue rope that marks the trail.

Follow this trail as it goes steeply up for about 15 minutes. It then starts to level off and soon becomes an old overgrown road. Follow this road until it merges with another road on your left. This second road is in far better condition. Turn left on this road.

Follow this road for about 30 to 45 minutes. At some point the top of Mt. Horne will be visible on your right. The trail leaves the road and goes through an old clearcut. This trail is not very clear - look for flagging. (If you follow the road past this turnoff, the road will become a bit more overgrown at some points and end about 10 minutes past the clearcut.) Follow the trail/flagging to the top (20-30 minutes).

- At the top is a cairn with a notebook to write your name. This book has been there for several years - treat with care.

- There is a good 360 degree view from the top: Mt. Arrowsmith, Mt. Baker, mountains in Strathcona, Georgia Strait, etc.

Features

This trail features lakes and views.

Water

In the winter there can be a few very small creeks from which to obtain water (there was some snowmelt) but these disappear in the summer.
