Description
The footbed for this trail has some rocky bits but is mostly woodchip.
The time estimate for the loop includes a lunch stop.
This is a surprising trail that winds its way through an urban area, occasionally crossing streets but mostly in deep woods or parks. A map is available at the Saanich Parks website . It is a bit hard to follow as not all street names are included.
There are a number of options but the hike described here begins at the corner of Chatterton Way and Dalewood, continuing up Chatterton, through a shopping centre and across Royal Oak Drive to Falaise and Derwenter. From that point the trail itself begins, climbing through deep woods up to a water tower, descending and climbing again to an outlook point.
The trail continues through a number of small parks with a lunch stop at Loehbruner Park (sp) where there is a small duck pond and a picnic table. The trail then winds its way down to Fir Tree Glen and entrances to Rithet’s Bog, a nature conservation area of 42 hectares. Turning left allows a ¾ circuit of the bog, turning right allows a ¼ circuit back to the parking spot.
It is possible to park in the shopping centre but that requires road walking at the end instead of the beginning of the hike.
